Kenyans on social media shared a photo believed to be The Standard newspaper cover for the Wednesday, May 27, 2020 issue.
The photo went viral in both political circles and social media. Kenyans on Twitter debated about the controversial title ‘Rachael in hiding?’.
The article alleged that Deputy President William Ruto’s marriage was on the rocks. It claimed that Rachel Ruto fled from their matrimonial home in the leafy suburbs of Karen.
“Nobody has seen Rachel since the beginning of March this year. She was last seen taking off with the rest of the family after a heated fight,” a section of the article claimed.
Fake cover page
The Standard Newspaper took to its social media page to say that the viral cover page is fake.
The real cover page has a story about former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. He gives his sentiments on a possible coalition with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
In the fake cover page, the paper claims that there is a full story on Rachael Ruto on page 4 of the newspaper. However, the newspaper itself does not have any story about the Deputy President’s wife.
Kenyans are consistently falling victim to fake news. They often contain manipulated images and weird fonts.
A few Kenyans have taken to social media to condemn fake news and urge digital papers to take the necessary security measures to prevent the spread of fake news.
