Tokyo 2020 Olympics still ongoing despite covid-19 fears

Tokyo 2020 President Yoshiro Mori said that the games would open as planned on 24 July. He added that they would like to coordinate with the national government and act calmly. Yoshiro announced that they had not considered cancellations of the Tokyo Games.

Tokyo governor, Yuriko Koike promised to implement thorough measures to protect people from the virus in the run up to the Olympics. Tobias Harris said that the struggles from the covid-19 sparked concerns about the forthcoming Tokyo Olympics.

Saburo Kawabuchi, the mayor of the Olympics village, said that they had no clue when they would find a solution for the virus. However, they still hoped an increase in humidity would kill the disease. Mr Kawabuchi also played for the japans men’s football this year.

Tickets

During the event, 11,000 athletes, thousands of staff and volunteers are expected to show up for the Olympics. The organization produced 7.8 million tickets. The lottery has distributed around 4.5m tickets domestically.

Other games

The virus caused the cancellation of different sports including the Grand Prix, which is due to take place in April. Grand Prix is a form of motor sport competition which has its roots in organized automobile racing that began in France in 1895.

They postponed the formula one’s Shanghai Grand Prix from mid-April with the Vietnamese Grand Prix also under threat. The virus has also impacted athletics, golf and football.

Women’s football relocated to Australia and women basketball to Serbia. While boxing qualifiers for the Asia ocean region due to take place in Wuhan moved to Jordan, world indoor tracks and field championships supposed to be in Nanjing in mid-March got postponed for a year.

Zika virus

In 2016, several athletes skipped the Rio de Janeiro Olympics over fears of the Zika virus. Mosquito bites transmitted the virus. However, Rio games did not confirm any cases connected to it.

Covid-19

Death toll in China spikes as Hubei province announce 242 new deaths from the virus. New infections jumped by more than 14,000. The increase in numbers is due to a broader definition of what constitutes a confirmed case.

The new cases include people with the symptoms rather than those who just test positive. There are at least 570 confirmed cases of covid-19 in more than 25 countries outside mainland China. Yesterday China reported fewer cases of the virus than the day before signalling the virus may be slowing.

Texas, USA, confirmed its 15th case of the covid-19 virus.

Japan announced its first covid 19 death in the south-west of Tokyo.
