Traffic cop killed after matatu loses control along Valley Road

A traffic police officer was Friday killed after he was run over by a speeding matatu along Valley Road, Nairobi.

The sergeant of police was on duty at the junction of Valley Road and Ralph Bunche Road at about 5 pm.

A matatu that was speeding down the hilly road lost control and rammed onto six other cars ahead of it causing chaos.

Witnesses said the officer identified as Mustafa Lolo was controlling the flow of vehicles at the place when he was hit and run over by the matatu.

The matatu also hit a wall of a commercial building in the area before stalling amid chaos.

At least five other people were injured in the accident.

They were taken to the hospital with multiple injuries.

The driver of the matatu told police the brakes failed causing the accident.

The incident caused a huge traffic snarl on the busy road as police tried to clear it.

Head of traffic in Nairobi Joshua Omukata said at least six cars were damaged.

“We have lost a dedicated officer in the accident and some people were injured. We will investigate it,” he said.

The body was moved to the mortuary.
