Uhuru’s warning on school reopening


On Saturday the 12th of December 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta issued new directives regarding school reopening come January 2021.

The head of state was speaking during the Jamhuri day celebrations at Nyayo Stadium, Nairobi. President Uhuru also reiterated his unending commitment and support to seeing children receive an education.

The head of state also warned parents and guardians against failing to comply with the government’s directive on school reopening come January 2021. President Uhuru further tasked the ministry of education with the responsibility of making sure that children go to school.

According to President Uhuru, the ministry of education should use chiefs to account for school going children within their jurisdictions.

President Uhuru also instructed the ministry of education to receive reports from all primary and secondary schools. The information should also include any school-going child who will not report to their learning institution.

The president also urged the ministry of education to publicize the school re-entry education policy. This policy will facilitate readmission for students who may not be able to report back to school due to pregnancy.

Government pledges support to schools.

School reopening has faced a lot of controversies, with many wondering if students will report with Covid-19 pandemic.

However, the government has pledged to provide schools with facemasks, sanitizers, and soaps, a move that has brought great relief to parents. This will cost the government ksh 2.1 billion.

The government has also allocated ksh 28.8 billion to facilitate classroom construction and help in maintaining social distance.

Secondary schools will build 100 tuition blocks at ksh 2.5 billion in the next two years. Primary schools will use ksh 1.2 billion to refurbish old ablution blocks and construct new classrooms to expand students learning space.

The government has also revamped water and sanitation to help in curbing the spread of Covid-19 in schools.

According to education CS Prof George Magoha, schools are set to reopen on the 4th of January 2021.
