Woman loses life in rescue attempt from rapists

A woman lost her life when a rescue attempt by the police ended in tragedy. The police were on a mission to save the woman from two rapists yesterday night in Nairobi.

The victim, who was later identified as a 26-year-old woman named Mary Wanjiru was shot in her upper thigh and leg. She bled out from the wounds and died.

Gun Battle

According to the police, the shootout involved a team of officers who were first on the scene as they responded to a distress call. They then engaged two armed men for a couple of minutes.

Reports from family and police indicate that Mary Wanjiru was kidnapped from her home in Zimmerman estate Nairobi. The two gunmen then dragged her to a thicket located near the Northern bypass assaulted her.

Boda Boda operators noticed the commotion and also alerted the police who had earlier received a report from a friend of Mary regarding the kidnap.

On arrival, the police alerted the kidnappers to their presence which prompted an exchange between the two parties. One of the armed assailants opened fire first and thereby ensured the deadly assault.

One perpetrator was captured as he attempted to flee while the other escaped.

Pronounced dead

The police rushed Mary to Jacaranda Maternity hospital when they noticed that she was bleeding profusely from her leg and thigh.

Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police who are investigating the incident have recovered an AK 47 and spent cartridges of a pistol on the scene.

The two police officers whose weapons were discharged are also expected to record a statement. They were and also disarmed for further analysis. Interrogation of the arrested assailant continues at the station.

Nairobi police boss Rashid Yakhub confirmed the incident and has promised a prompt investigation is underway.
