Barcelona fired coach Ernesto Valverde on Monday and named Quique Setien, the new coach just after being eliminated from in the Super Cup Semis in a match that Athletico Madrid won 3 – 2.
Setien has in the past coached Las Palmas, and Real Betis is under a contract with the Spanish giants until June 2022.
Valverde, 55, leaves Barcelona after winning a Copa del Rey crown and two La Liga titles. He never won a Champion League title, which is an objective for the big-spending clubs like Barcelona.
The decision that led to the sacking of Valverde was arrived at after a board consultation that took more than four hours at Camp Nou on Monday.
At that time, Ronald Koeman and Xavi Hernandez, who had expressed a desire to coach Barca turned town the job. The club had considered several names including Mauricio Pochettino and Thierry Henry.
The Spanish Champions are currently top of La Liga despite having won only one of their last five games. This is the first time in 17 years that the club is sacking a coach in mid-season after Louis van Gaal in 2003,
Part of the club statement issued on Monday night read, “FC Barcelona and Ernesto Valverde have reached an agreement to terminate the contract that united both parties.”
Despite the sack, Valverde was part of the Monday morning training session. He was expected to return for a goodbye on Tuesday morning.
Setien will also be presented at a press conference on Tuesday, 1630 EAT, at Camp Nou.
