Football Kenya Federation have unveiled Betting firm Betway as the Official sponsors of the FKF Shield Cup with the competition changing its name to FKF Betway Cup.
The deal worth Kshs 15 Million per year is set to run for three years. 48 teams are set take part in this year’s edition drawn from FKF leagues and non league. The winner will play the CAF confederation cup next season and will take home kshs. 2 Million.
Betway takes over sponsorship role from Sportpesa who withdrew sponsorship and closed shop in Kenya. They become the third sponsors after GoTV and Sportpesa.
Bandari FC are the defending Champions having beaten Kariobangi Sharks 3-1 in the final played in June 2019, at the MISC Kasarani.
The match had earlier been rained on at halftime on Saturday 1 June prompting the referee to call off the clash at a time when Bandari were leading 2-1. The clashed was replayed from the 46th minute, on Sunday 2 June where the Dockers added the third goal for a 3-1 win to reclaim the trophy they last won in 2015.
In the edition, 64 teams entered the competition a large group being from Kenya Premier League, National Super League and Division One.
Gor Mahia FC have the most number of titles – 10. They last won it in 2012 beating Sofapaka 3-0 in the penalty shoot-outs while their last final appearance was in 2013 where they lost 1-0 to AFC Leopards.
