AC Milan wins Serie A 2021-2022

Thanks to its victory against Sassuolo during the final day of Serie A (3-0), AC Milan was crowned champion of Serie A! The Milanese club thus succeeds its rival, Inter, who won the championship last year.

The suspense will have lasted until the end. After 38 days, on the final day of the Championship, we now know the name of the champion in Italy. Sacred winner of Sassuolo earlier this Sunday (3-0), AC Milan secured its place on the roof of the country on the last day. Because this Sunday afternoon, Olivier Giroud’s teammates had their destiny in hand. We had to win to ensure this coronation. This was the case thanks to a very great Olivier Giroud. The Frenchman scored twice in this meeting and therefore greatly contributed to the victory of his team. A successful end to the season for the striker who was not called up by Didier Deschamps for the next meeting.

Authors of a more than interesting season with 26 wins, 8 draws and only four defeats, the Rossoneri were above all able to resist competition from Inter who did not give up until the end. Behind, Napoli (3rd) was too late and what about Juventus which has not been level throughout the season. The reasons for this coronation expected since 2011, the year of AC Milan’s last title in Serie A, are quite numerous and not necessarily common. Because if we look at the statistics more closely, the Milanese have “only” the fourth best attack, but it is on the defensive level that the club has taken a step forward.

A strong backline

Best defense of this Italian championship with Inter and Napoli (31 goals), its two pursuers, AC Milan was able to count on a solid rear guard, all accompanied by a powerful goalkeeper. With the departure of Gigio Donnarumma from PSG, Mike Maignan perfectly replaced the Italian goalkeeper and he logically finished as the best goalkeeper in the Championship. And in front of him, players like Théo Hernandez, Fikayo Tomori, Pierre Kalulu or Davide Calabria to name a few didn’t miss much. Another aspect also weighed heavily in the balance: victories at the finish or very short.

While we thought AC Milan was inside at times, the Italian club never gave up with many successes in the last moments this season, or even by a small goal difference. Successes in which Olivier Giroud, who arrived last summer, sometimes participated with nine goals and four offerings. Rafael Leao (10 goals) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (8 goals) are also among Milan’s top scorers this season, which was able to rely on several individuals and not one man in particular. Finally we must salute a certain Stefano Pioli who knew how to shape his 4-2-3-1, while he was still in the midst of a storm a year and a half ago.
