Following the victory of Borussia Dortmund yesterday against RB Leipzig (3-2), Eintracht Frankfurt found itself fifth as it faced twelfth Mainz for the 32nd day. An important match for the Adlers in the Champions League race, but also for the formation of Rhineland-Palatinate which could formalize its maintenance in case of success.
Relegated in 24 of the 32 days of the Bundesliga, Mainz finished the season strong and opened the scoring early in the match with Kevin Onisiwo (11th). Bo Svensson’s team thought they were heading for success, but Ajdin Hrustic equalized late in the game (86th). This 1-1 draw does not allow Mainz to be officially saved, but it is very close. For Eintracht, this is a bad operation as Adolf Hütter’s team remain fifth, one point behind Borussia Dortmund.
