Liga: Real Madrid move on to ninth straight win over Granada

Real Madrid are getting a little closer to the title with this 2-1 success on Granada’s lawn. Ferland Mendy and Karim Benzema scored the Madrid goals.

Real Madrid is gradually approaching the title. Before the start of the game, the Merengues were still one point ahead of FC Barcelona, and could therefore take back these four units ahead if they won in Andalusia tonight. A trip to a Granada team rather in shape at the moment, and which has clearly approached the European places, and this despite its condition of promoted. For this meeting, which promised to be a little more complicated than what one might think, Zinedine Zidane surprised his world, since he shielded his environment, as he had done in the Spanish Super Cup earlier in the season. Casemiro, Valverde, Kroos, Modric and Isco were thus aligned at the same time, with Karim Benzema as the only offensive player. And it worked pretty well, with the 2-1 win, even though it was tough in the second period.

Against a team of Diego Martinez who generally manages to neutralize his opponents well, the Madrilenians started well, and even quickly opened the scoring, via a surprise guest. From the tenth minute of play, Ferland Mendy, combining power and finesse, entered the rival surface and, at an almost closed angle, propelled a missile into the skylight of Rui Silva. His first goal under the white tunic … and what a goal! Enough to start the meeting for the team of the capital and it was not over, since another former Lyonnais was going to make the break. Served by Luka Modric, Karim Benzema entered the area, fixed his defender and opened his foot well to beat the opposing goalkeeper (0-2, 16th). Real Madrid was well in its match, and when Granada attacked, Courtois responded present, as on this head of Duarte (36th).

A slightly less brilliant second period

The leader of the Iberian championship was not satisfied with this advantage of two goals and continued to attack, like these attempts of Benzema (43rd) and Isco (44th), rather in legs this evening just like Luka Modric. Real Madrid therefore did the job, more than well, and showed why it is at the top of this Liga. Zinedine Zidane’s tactical bet was therefore more than a winner, and the team had more depth than one might think. However, when the Merengues returned from the locker room, they would be picked cold. After a loss by Casemiro in the middle, Yangel Herrera launched Darwin Machis. The Granada winger finished the action wonderfully in front of Courtois (1-2, 50th).

Real Madrid stayed pretty well in the match, but we felt that the locals had a little more bite and responder. Zidane wanted to breathe new life into his team by bringing in Rodrygo and Asensio just after the hour, but we felt a less serene team. The score did not move, however, despite several fears late in the game. Courtois thus left a superb parade, then Ramos saved practically on his line in front of Azeez (85th). With the streak of nine straight wins since the La Liga took over, Real Madrid are closer to the title than ever. A win on Thursday against Villarreal would seal the final victory for the Madrilenians, who can also settle for two draws in the last two games to be crowned.
