Thanks to a nice strike from Xeka, LOSC won against Paris Saint-Germain (1-0) in Tel Aviv and won the first Champions Trophy in its history.
Paris Saint-Germain has started their 2021-22 season badly. Winner of the last eight editions of the Champions Trophy, PSG tried to defend its title in Tel Aviv (Israel) without its stars Mbappé, Neymar, Di Maria, Verratti, Marquinhos, its new recruits Donnarumma and Ramos and Gueye, last package minute due to a positive COVID-19 test. To compensate for his absences, Mauricio Pochettino aligned a 4-3-3 with Danilo in sentry, Hakimi on the right of the defense with Diallo on the left, Dina Ebimbe in the middle as well as Kalimuendo in attack. For his first official match at the head of the Mastiffs, Jocelyn Gourvennec set up a classic 4-4-2 with Araujo and Bamba on the wings and an offensive duo Yilmaz-David.
In a closed start to the match, the Lille decided to leave the ball to evolve in low block and push the PSG to leave spaces on the counter-attacks. But ultimately, the Parisians did not take any risk and only framed one strike in the first period signed Draxler (28th). The German tried from afar and forced Jardim to turn away with his fist. On the Ile-de-France side, Hakimi was very present on his right flank, putting Reinildo and Bamba in great difficulty, but the centers of the Moroccan did not worry enough the Brazilian goalkeeper (18th, 39th).
Icardi, helpless and frustrated
And finally, on a Lille counterattack, Yilmaz appeared in the area and forced Navas to deploy (40th). A few moments later, Yilmaz, again him, played with his physique to be able to serve in withdrawal Xeka. The northerner midfielder released a powerful strike from the right into the small opposite net to allow LOSC to open the scoring (1-0, 45th). A blow for Pochettino and his men, just before half-time.
The second half started on the same basis as the first act, with more intensity and opportunities on the PSG side. With a header, Diallo missed the frame (56th) and Draxler saw his recovery with his right foot flee the frame (56th). Moments before, Icardi thought to equalize closely for PSG but the Argentinian was reported offside (55th). Apart from these few fears, the Mastiff’s defense was very solid and well in place throughout the game, leaving the opposing attackers frustrated (14 balls only hit for Icardi).
Like last season, Lille were tactically effective during the 90 minutes. Following a reflex stop by Jardim in the last moments on a strike from Wijnaldum (90th + 1), LOSC won and won their first Trophée des Champions. A good confidence building before a season where they will have to defend their status as Champions of France, while showing their worth in the Champions League. For his part, Mauricio Pochettino is obviously waiting for the return of his internationals to really start the 2021-22 exercise for PSG.
