After a few days of negotiations, Mesut Özil and Arsenal have agreed to a termination of the last six months of the German’s contract. This should bounce back quickly as it is expected in the coming hours from Fenerbahçe.
The story between Arsenal and Mesut Özil is about to end. After 7 and a half years of relationship, the brilliant German attacking midfielder will leave the London club. He had joined him in the summer of 2013 from Real Madrid, in exchange for a crazy sum of € 50 million. It’s the end of a long soap opera that seems to suit everyone: the player, the Gunners and Mesut Özil’s next club, probably Fenerbahçe.
For a few days now, the left-hander’s agent and Arsenal management have been negotiating for a termination of the player’s last six months of contract. A period during which he should have received more than € 7 million in salary, a very heavy sum for English finances, already impacted by the economic crisis. Based on information from The Athlectic, an agreement in principle has just been reached. The formalization is expected in the coming hours.
Arsenal to save on Özil’s salary
Özil, the highest paid member in Arsenal history (€ 400,000 per week) where he had extended his contract in 2018, was no longer in the plans of Mikel Arteta, who however trusted him at the start . It didn’t last. Quickly, the technician never again appealed to the German international (92 caps, 23 goals). It has therefore not been seen on a field since March 7, 2020 … An eternity for an element of its caliber.
We should quickly see him again because if he terminated his contract, it is also because he came to an agreement with Fenerbahçe on the terms of a collaboration. He is expected to sign a three-and-a-half-year lease, a long term for a 32-year-old player, and earn € 5m per year, in addition to a € 2.5m signing bonus. It is even expected this weekend in the capital of Istanbul.
