Premier League: West Ham overthrows Chelsea

Date:

Led twice by Chelsea, West Ham ended up defeating Premier League leaders 3-2 after a spectacular meeting.

After Leicester two weeks ago and Manchester United last weekend, Chelsea had an appointment for a new shock on this 15th day of the Premier League. The European champion went to the Olympic Stadium in London to face West Ham, author of a very good first part of the season, illustrated by a 4th place at kick-off, even if the latest results are more irregular. David Moyes presented a usual team with Zouma and Diop in central defense, the much courted Declan Rice in the midfield and a Bowen-Lanzini duo in support of Antonio. Chelsea started without Lukaku, who had returned from injury a few days ago, but with Havertz in the lead, helped by Ziyech and Mount behind him, while James and Alonso took the roles of pistons.

No Kanté in the middle on the other hand and it was quickly seen because the two teams left a lot of spaces in the heart of the game, offering many possibilities to Ziyech (6th), Bowen (8th), James (11th) and Havertz (12th). The twenty-two players engaged in a very intense duel, with even a little tension on the ground, like this contact between Jorginho, Rice and Lanzini (23rd). After a first header from Havertz (26th), Chelsea ended up opening the scoring by Thiago Silva, upon receiving this corner from Mount (0-1, 29th). In the process, the Brazilian saved his people on his line (30th). Man of this first period, the former Parisian could not do everything either, and in particular to make up for this double error of his own, a complicated ball from Jorginho to Mendy, who, instead of clearing in first intention, procrastinated before hanging Bowen (38th).

West Ham brings down the leader

Lanzini did not shake and equalized from the penalty spot (1-1, 40th). The Hammers thought to return to the locker room with this rather deserved score only they replaced too late on this last against, leaving Ziyech to change wings to find the very beautiful volley from Mount which hit the first post of Fabianski (1-2, 45th ). The second half started again on high bases with one difference, Havertz, hit on a tackle from Zouma gave way to Lukaku. There were still less clear chances but still the same intensity. In an ideal position, Ziyech unscrewed his shot (55th) only a minute later, Bowen took advantage of a nice collective number to get into a striking position and surprise Mendy with a ball slipped between the legs of Christensen (2-2, 56th ).

Proof that the Blues were not having a great day against this very playful and selfless training, they conceded two goals in the same game for the first time this season. And there was still a good half hour to play. Zouma left him his partners through injury (68th) but that did not cool the intentions of Moyes’ charges. They even came close to the goal on this center at the far post of Antonio for a Bowen too short by a hair (75 ‘). Jostled, Chelsea walked on a wire and ended up losing an improbable goal from Masuaku, a strike completely off-center on the left side and with an improbable trajectory which surprised Mendy (3-2, 87th). Bowen could even have gone for his double (89th) but the important thing is elsewhere. After Leicester, Liverpool and Tottenham, West Ham caught a new big fish by dropping the leader and returned to four points from the podium.
