PSG’s record against German clubs in European Cups

PSG face RB Leipzig tomorrow in the Champions League semi-final for an unprecedented meeting between the two clubs. It’s time to take stock of the Parisian club against the various German formations.

PSG has a date with history. Tomorrow evening, the capital club inaugurates the first of two Franco-German duels in the semi-finals of the Champions League. Before this unprecedented clash against RB Leipzig (to follow live commented on our site), then the next day between OL and Bayern Munich, we take stock of Paris against teams from across the Rhine. Should we see something positive? Out of a total of 17 matches, the Ile-de-France residents emerged victorious 10 times from their direct confrontations (for 2 draws and 5 losses). You can also see the glass half empty. Because this assessment begins during the 1994/1995 season with two successes against Bayern Munich in the group stage of the Champions League. But that season, PSG had stopped in the semifinals of the C1. Until today, it was still the only time that the club had reached this level of competition. Bis repetita?

It must be said and this is not a surprise, most of these confrontations have been linked to Bayern (8 out of 17). Everything started well against Rekordmeister with these two successes, the first 2-0 in September 1994 with goals signed Weah and Bravo. Already a poison for the Bavarian defense, the Liberian will be the author of a mythical goal at the Olympiastadion two months later. After a stint with Pascal Nouma, the Ballon d’Or 95 reviewed 4 defenders before sending the leather into the skylight of a dumbfounded Oliver Kahn. PSG won 1-0. The two teams meet again three years later, still in the Champions League group stage. In Munich, Paris is scuttled with the performance of the unfortunate Christophe Revault. The nightmare begins in the 4th minute with the opening of Elber’s score then it is the disaster for the goalkeeper, terribly guilty on the second and third goal, ineffective on the fourth and the fifth. PSG left Bavaria with a scathing 5-1 defeat in the bag. Revault’s career will never recover despite his presence on the pitch two weeks later at the Parc des Princes and a 3-1 rematch.

The results are positive for PSG

In 2000 this time, and still in the group stage, PSG won at home 1-0 thanks to Laurent Leroy in stoppage time. Three weeks later, Bayern reversed the trend and won 2-0 on goals of Salihamidžić and Paulo Sérgio. The dark years of the Parisians arrived and it was not until 2008 to find the trace of a new duel against a German team. That year, a 3-1 group loss to Schalke (Chantôme goal) did not interfere with the qualification of Paul Le Guen’s men, who even beat Wolfsburg (5-1 in aggregate scores) in the round of 16 of the UEFA Cup. In the fall of 2010, PSG kept Jürgen Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund in check in the group stage of what is now called the Europa League (0-0 in Paris, 1-1 in Germany with a goal of … Chantôme).

It was then that PSG entered a new era with the arrival of QSI at the head of the club. Now it is the Champions League that is targeted. In 2014, for its second participation in the C1 since the arrival of the new owners, the red and blue team made short work of Bayer Leverkusen. On the first leg, a 4-0 success on the other side of the Rhine already seals the outcome of this double confrontation, which will end with another 2-1 victory at the Parc with the goal of a certain Marquinhos, already. In 2017, it was the reunion with Bayern Munich in the group stage, and Carlo Ancelotti. Unfortunately for the former Parisian coach, he will be a victim of the realism of his former team. This 3-0 defeat cost him his job the next day. It is also the first great success of the Neymar-Mbappé era. The return will be much more painful for PSG with a logical 3-1 defeat, as Jupp Heynckes took over the Bavarian giant. Finally, we arrive at 2020, and this round of 16 against BvB. Shaken in all directions in Dortmund, the Parisians are doing quite well with a 2-1 defeat, which will allow them to fall behind on the return. In an empty Parc des Princes during this pre-confinement period, Neymar and Bernat offer the qualification to what was not yet called the Final 8.
