Real Madrid win the Spanish Super Cup after defeating Athletic Bilbao

Thanks to a goal from Luka Modric and the inevitable Karim Benzema, Real Madrid won against Athletic Bilbao (2-0) and therefore won the Spanish Super Cup. The 12th in its history.

At the King Abdullah Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao faced off in the Spanish Super Cup final. At the start of the match, Karim Benzema’s teammates put the ball down and created the first dangerous chances. The young Rodrygo, aligned on the right lane of the attack, showed himself to his advantage. On one of his many rides, he served Kroos who sent a powerful strike narrowly blocked by the Basque defense. KB9, he distinguished himself by his deviations and his always fair discounts. He was not far from a goal when his shot caressed the left post of Unai Simon (18th).

For their part, the men of Marcelino Garcia proceeded against and created some opportunities. Launched in depth, Inaki Williams saw his shot being clearly slowed down (with his hand) by a tackle from David Alaba. But not enough to whistle a penalty. But in the end, it was almost logical that the Merengues opened the scoring. Twirling since the start of the match, Rodrygo served Modric who sent a marvelous curling shot into the top corner of Simon (1-0, 38th).

A twentieth trophy for Benzema

In the second half, the people of Madrid came back with the same intentions. Those of putting the ball down and patiently waiting for the gap to create spaces. Marcelino decided, to reverse the trend, to bring in Nico Williams, Inaki’s little brother, who had been decisive in the semi-final against Atlético de Madrid. But this time, his entry was very discreet. Real also ended up doubling the bet. On a hand in the box of Yeray, quite similar to that of Alaba, the match referee was waiting for the VAR to whistle a penalty. A penalty transformed without shaking by Karim Benzema (2-0, 51st).

The Frenchman scored his 303rd goal in the colors of Real Madrid and was just five behind legend Alfredo Di Stefano (308) in the club’s top scorer rankings, but still far behind Cristiano Ronaldo (450). The Basques sent their last forces into battle and obtained a penalty at the very end of the game. A penalty that could have changed everything with the exclusion of Militao (88th). But as a symbol, Courtois marvelously fended off Raul Garcia’s shot. And finally, the teammates of Luka Modric, still exceptional in the midfield this Saturday, ensured victory. After dominating Barça (3-2) in the semi-finals, Real Madrid got the better of Athletic Bilbao in the final and above all won the 12th Spanish Super Cup in its history.
