Sunderland go back to the Championship!

Date:

Fifth in the League One regular season (D3), Sunderland won the right to accompany Wigan and Rotherham in the Championship (D2)! Stuck in the English third division for four seasons, the club made infamous by the Netflix series, Sunderland till I Die, beat Wycombe in the accession final at Wembley (2-0). In front of a majority Red & White Army in the London lair, on two services from Alex Pritchard, Eliot Embleton opened the scoring, before the championship’s co-top scorer Ross Stewart completed the success of the Black Cats with his 26th goal of the season.

Appointed on February 11, when Sunderland had fallen sharply in the standings, Alex Neil managed to reverse the trend. The 40-year-old Scottish coach ends the season with a record of 10 wins, 7 draws and 1 loss in 18 coached matches. A successful bet also for Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, Swiss millionaire and son of the former owner of OM, Jean-Louis Dreyfus, at the head of the Black Cats since February 2021. Sunderland will evolve next year in the Championship. The club from the North East of England played until 2017 in the Premier League, before falling, in two years, to the third level of English football.
