In the League of Champions: Man City prove credentials with win over Madrid

Manchester City will revel at the chance of facing Lyon after dumping Real Madrid out of the Champions League.

Leading 2-1 from the first leg, the dethroned English Champions did not relent in the second leg, pressing Real Madrid and forcing them into errors.

    Real-ly renewed

Now, since the return of football after three months stop due to COVID-19, Real Madrid have played with renewed confidence.

Prior to facing Man City, the Merengue had played 10 games, winning nine and drawing just one. Their inspired display saw them turn a five-point deficit against Barcelona into a five-point lead as they beat the Catalans to the La Liga title.

But Manchester City played like a team with everything to lose. Against Madrid, City pushed the Spanish Champions to press the panic button – twice!

    Relentless City

The first goal resulted from Gabriel Jesus’s relentless press, which forced Varane into an error. Jesus pounced, sliding the ball to Sterling, who scored his 100th goal for Man City in 242 games.

Real pulled one back twenty minutes later, and appeared like they would cause an upset. Suddenly, they were beating City’s press.

But that was not to be as another Varane error left Jesus through on goal, who then dinked the ball over the advancing Courtois from a tight angle to seal the win.

    Guardiola’s delight

Man City lost a host of chances but bossed the game afterwards, and City coach, Pep Guardiola delighted at fulltime.

“Of course it’s important,” he said. “For Real Madrid and Barcelona to be in the last-16 is normal, you have to beat them to win the Champions League. Barca, Bayern, of course, it’s important for this and the future.”

Man City will now face Olympic Lyon, who dumped out Juventus following a 2-2 draw at the Juventus Stadium.

Indeed, after beating perennial Champions League winners, City will fear no one going forward.
