Kenya’s top coaches lament fixture pile-up as FKF rollouts Betway Quarterfinal draw

Kenya’s top coaches, Tusker FCs Robert Matano and Gor Mahia’s Manuel Vaz Pinto have lamented the fixture pile-up in the Kenya football scene.

After the resumption of football on May 14th, following a two-month break due to rising COVID cases, FKF announced that the league would turn into a marathon. Thus, teams were to play two to three matches a day.

The fixture congestion has come about as FKF attempts to wrap up the top-flight fixtures and League Cup in good time.

However, Coach Robert Matano and his Gor Mahia counterpart have added their voices to concerns that the fixture pile-up could be taking its toll on players.

Matano concerned with fatigue

In an interview with the Tusker Fc website, Robert Matano expressed concerns of fatigue after his team had played three games in seven days, with travel in between games. Matano said that while he had squad depth, the fixture congestion was still concerning.

“There were some elements of fatigue because we have been travelling and playing three games in one week, which is not easy,” Matano said after Tusker beat Luanda Villa 1-0 in the Betway Cup last 16.

“But we are holding,” Matano said, “We will shuffle the team to ensure everyone remains fresh.”

Vaz Pinto hails Gor players

Gor Mahia’s Manuel Vaz Pinto also lamented the fixture pile-up. He called the players ‘heroes’ for putting up with the high number of games.

“This was our eighth game in 20 days,” Pinto said after Gor beat Mara Sugar to progress to the Betway Cup Quarter Finals, “These guys (players) are like heroes.”

Additionally, the teams have had only three days to rest, with the Quarter Finals set for Wednesday and Thursday. After that, the semis will take place on the 12th and 13th of June.

Both Tusker and Gor Mahia will have heavy fixtures for the Betway Quarters. Thus, they will have to play their best squad. Tusker faces AFC Leopards while Bandari takes on Equity FC in the first quarter-final fixtures on Wednesday 9th.

Gor Mahia takes on Kariobangi Sharks while Nairobi City Stars take on Bidco United in the second fixtures on Thursday, 10th.
