With the pandemic increasingly worrying, a light at the end of the tunnel has been the development of vaccine candidates who can help in the fight against COVID-19. This Tuesday (15), the governor of São Paulo João Doria (PSDB-SP), during a press conference at the Palácio dos Bandeirantes, announced his confidence in the officialization of an agreement between the Ministry of Health and the Butantan Institute to make it available in SUS (Sistema CoronaVac, a Chinese vaccine that has been tested in São Paulo. Butantan’s own director, Dimas Covas, even said that the formalization can happen as early as Wednesday (16).
During the interview, Doria said the following: “I do not see how the federal government, under any allegation, can tell Brazilians that there are first class and second class Brazilians, those who will be vaccinated before and those who will be vaccinated afterwards. I I doubt that the President of the Republic (Jair Bolsonaro) has the capacity to say this to Brazilians. I am convinced that he will say that the vaccination will be done for everyone “.
Meanwhile, Dimas Covas reiterated that only bureaucratic steps remain for the closing of the agreement between Butantan and the interim Minister of Health Eduardo Pazuello, who has been talking with the São Paulo government and the institution linked to state management: “The release of resources depends on some bureaucratic procedure. There is a team from the Ministry and Butantan that have been working since last week, and Tuesday and Wednesday a team from Butantan is taking off to Brasília to finish this bureaucratic process “.
The director of Instituto Butantan added that “from Wednesday (16), Thursday (17)”, formally all procedures will be able to be announced from the point of view of financing. Last Wednesday (9), Covas confirmed that Butantan’s idea is to supply up to 100 million doses in April of next year. With this, the institution will invest in the expansion of its factory in São Paulo, with R $ 97 million already collected by the São Paulo government from the private sector. The renovation begins in November and is due to be delivered in the second half of 2022.
The vaccine developed by the Chinese laboratory with the Butantan Institute has in its formula the new inactivated coronavirus, that is, it contains only inactive fragments of this virus (there is no chance of triggering an infection). With the application of the two predicted doses, it is expected that each patient’s immune system begins to produce antibodies against the COVID-19 virus.
It is worth remembering that the formula developed by the Chinese laboratory Sinovac Biotech in partnership with the Butatan Institute can start to be distributed, en masse and free of charge, even in January 2021.
