Batman: Three Jokers gets scary trailer full of references

In the saga Darkseid War, in the magazine Justice League, Batman sat in Mobius’ chair, which allows its user to access the great secrets of the universe. The Batman didn’t think about where we came from or where we’re going. Without hesitating, even for an instant, he asked what the Joker ‘s identity is. He was appalled by the answer, revealed later: there are actually three Clowns of Crime. This idea has been marinating since 2016 and the first edition of the special Batman: Three Jokers arrived this week in the United States, entitled to a scary trailer.

Even before the launch of the miniseries, written by Geoff Johns on the adult label Black Label, the artist Jason Fabok had already put forward the names of each of the three Jokers: the Criminal, who hardly smiles and is a criminal genius; the Clown, who likes to tell jokes and smile all the time while committing crimes; and the Comedian, who is sadistic and is always laughing, in a mixture of the versions of Batman: The Deadly Joke and Batman: The Death of the Family.

The plot involves, in addition to Batman, two characters who suffered a lot at the hands of the Joker (s): the Red Hood, who was beaten brutally when he was still the second Robin; and Batgirl, who was raped and paraplegic after being shot at close range. Check out the video preview:

The trailer has some interesting references. The most obvious are the events mentioned above, with allusions to Robin’s death, in Batman: Family Death, with the right to the Red Hood handling a crowbar, the same object used by the Joker to kill him; and Crime Clown using a camera while watching Batgirl in a burning setting, reminiscent of the photos he took of Barbara Gordon and sent to Batman.

Two other quotes are also worth mentioning. The video displays a phrase over and over, “don’t see the evil, don’t speak of the evil, don’t hear the evil”, which goes against the Japanese proverb of the Three Wise Monkeys – after all, we’re talking about three Jokers. The other is “scars tell stories”, reminiscent of what Heath Ledger’s Crime Clown said in the film Batman the dark knightby Christopher Nolan.

Batman: Three Jokers # 1 is already available out there and we will talk about this issue next week, on Wednesday (2), in the column on comics from Canaltech which brings together the main highlights of Marvel Comics and DC Comics released in the previous month – in this case, the August editions. Take the opportunity to see what happened in July.
