Folding smartphones: Samsung to supply screens to Chinese manufacturers

According to Korean media ETNews, Samsung Display would now supply folding OLED panels to manufacturers other than Samsung Electronics. In the second half of 2021, brands like Oppo, Vivo or Xiaomi could compete with Fold and Flip.

In 2021, folding smartphones could finally take off. According to media information ETNews, Samsung would have decided to end the exclusivity it reserved for itself. For the first time, third-party manufacturers have the option of ordering OLED screens capable of folding vertically (Z Flip style) or horizontally (Z Fold style). Oppo and Vivo could be the first to massively manufacture smartphones equipped with a folding Samsung panel.

Tens of millions of folding smartphones?

For 2 years, Samsung Display has supplied manufacturers with folding demonstration screens. Mass production was not allowed them, the Korean manufacturer not yet being able to meet demand. The Ultra-Thin-Glass screen, in ultra-thin folding glass, is now ready to be offered to all manufacturers.

In 2021, however, it remains unlikely that folding smartphones will meet with a success worthy of conventional smartphones. The article ofETNews indicates that a million OLED panels would be manufactured for Chinese brands from the third quarter, which is not much yet. On the other hand, Samsung would have ordered for its own use 10 million folding screens. The Z Flip 2 and Z Fold 3 could therefore be more successful than their predecessors.
