Is it possible to go back to Windows 10 after upgrading to Windows 11?

Have you installed Windows 11, tried it for a while, and even with the news, want to go back to Win 10? Fortunately, if the update was done with Windows Update and it happened less than ten days ago, it is possible to downgrade operating systems without losing personal files in the process.

This time, Microsoft was far less generous about the window of opportunity to return to the previous system without much work — in Windows 10, whoever migrated from Win 7 or 8.1 had up to 30 days to give up on the upgrade. The idea, apparently, is to prevent users from abusing the mechanism to go back to their favorite OS, while, of course, discouraging the practice to keep more users on the new software.

However, it is noteworthy that even with the shortest deadline, you can switch between operating systems freely. Check out this article how to get back to Windows 10 after you’ve upgraded to Windows 11.

How to get back from Windows 11 to Windows 10

The simplest method to downgrade to Windows 10 is through a system recovery tool. When available, the method can be found at Start Menu > Settings > System > Recovery > Resume.

You don’t need in-depth technical knowledge to perform the restore, so rest assured if you’re not very familiar with Windows. Just pay attention to each step and the warnings that appear on the screen for “downgrading”.

It is noteworthy that some programs may not survive the transition, so check if it is possible to download them again. In any case, it’s nice to have a recent backup saved to the cloud or an external storage device.

Has the 10 day deadline passed? still has a way

If your problems with Windows 11 started after Microsoft’s regret deadline, you can still restore to Windows 10. In this case, however, the personal files will not be kept, nor the programs that were on the computer, so a backup is indispensable.

To install Windows 10, you can opt for Media Creation Tool, an official MS software. With it, the system can be updated independently, without needing other accessories, or also using a pendrive.

Using it is quite simple: go to the official Microsoft website, download the Media Creation Tool and run it on your computer. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to start installing Windows 10 and everything will be promptly resolved.
