Qualcomm May Launch “Snapdragon Edition” of Partner Phones and Accessories

Qualcomm is one of the biggest processor manufacturers in the world and very recently announced the Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders, its own cell phone made in partnership with Asus. But it seems that the company’s idea is to expand the strategy of partnerships with the label “Snapdragon Edition”.

In an interview with TechRadar, Qualcomm’s head of marketing, Don McGuire, clarified interesting points about the launch of the company’s cell phone, Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders, and nudged Microsoft by saying that “our intention was never to enter the phone market and compete with our consumers. We are not Microsoft,” says McGuire.

Microsoft, it is worth remembering, acquired Nokia at the height of the Lumia line and presented its own smartphones with Windows Phone, which ended up pushing away possible partners in the use of the system. In recent years, the brand has also bet more and more on the Surface notebooks, computers and tablets line, competing directly with models equipped with Windows (its operating system).

For Qualcomm, entry into the cell phone business is about learning, not competing.

McGuire goes on to say that the idea behind Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders is about user response: “It’s more about: can we leverage, can we get feedback and is there a purpose to that? What kinds of things can we learn? And where would we go from there ?

The executive also cites the idea of partnership Snapdragon Editions: “we have some different scenarios, like: do we want ‘Snapdragon Editions’? Do we want to partner with our partners in wearables and other things and make a Snapdragon Edition of these products?”

The answers to all these questions are unclear, as Qualcomm itself may not be interested in a second-generation Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders.

But such a decision could lead the brand to partner with other companies and launch specific models and accessories to get more accurate feedback and ideas from more intense and high-level users.
