Telegram gained 25 million users in 72 hours

The massive migration of WhatsApp users to alternatives has obviously not only benefited Signal.

After the closure of Parler, the social network beloved by Trump supporters, and as WhatsApp winds its way through a storm after its terms of service were updated, alternative messaging apps are rubbing their hands. If Signal was propelled in a few days to the top of the most downloaded applications on iOS and Android, in particular thanks to tweets from Elon Musk and Edward Snowden, Telegram is not left out.

The Durov brothers’ secure messaging app gained 25 million new users in three days. Pavel Durov, CEO of Telegram, said in a statement that these new users are arriving from all over the world: 38% from Asia, 27% from Europe, 21% from Latin America, and 8% from North and South Africa. Middle East. This sudden growth allows it to reach some 500 million monthly active users. Durov explains in his post that this is a very significant growth in users of his application. For comparison, Telegram was gaining 1.5 million new users daily.

For Durov, the massive influx of new users is simple: users don’t want to be hostage to tech giants and no longer want to offer their privacy in exchange for a free service. But just like WhatsApp, messaging monetization is a must to make Telegram sustainable. A few weeks ago, the CEO of Telegram announced the establishment of a new economic model to make its application sustainable.
