– Attorney General Githu Muigai has resigned from his position, President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced
– Muigai resigned after more than six years of service and the President nominated Judge Paul Kihara Kariuki as his replacement
Attorney General Githu Muigai has resigned from his position after six-and-a-half years of service.
Githu’s resignation was made public by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday, February 13 , with the President announcing his immediate replacement.
Court of Appeal Judge Paul Kihara Kariuki was nominated by Uhuru to replace the now immediate former AG.
“I have received with regret the resignation of Attorney General Prof. Githu Muigai. I thank him for his service for the last six and a half years. I have nominated as his replacement Judge Paul Kihara Kariuki.” A statement from Uhuru’s social media read.
Among other appointments Uhuru announced included Kennedy Ogeto as Solicitor General and Njee Muturi as Deputy Chief of Staff.
Former Mandera Central MP Abdikadir Mohammed was appointed ambassador to South Korea.
It marked the end of a lucrative career as the government's legal adviser for Githu who has been at the helm since 29 August 2011.
Githu has had his highs and lows during his time as Attorney General, with opposition leader Raila Odinga being at the centre of his trials.
In 2013, after Uhuru was announced winner of the Presidential election, ODM moved to court to challenge the results and force a fresh election – something the AG found daunting to rule as the constitution was not clear on what a "fresh election" would entail.
More recently, Githu sounded numerous warnings to opposition against their outlawed swearing in ceremony, but his calls fell on deaf years as NASA, through Raila went ahead with the swearing in.
Githu's replacement, Justice Kariuki is also no stranger to matters involving the law, having been appointed as one of the High court Judges by President Mwai Kibaki back in 2003.
Before then, he was director of the Kenya School of Law.
