– The National Super Alliance has renamed Uhuru Park after its presidential candidate/leader Raila Odinga
– Siaya Senator James Orengo said they changed the park's name because it bears a name linked to Jubilee's Presidential Uhuru Kenyatta
The National Super Alliance brigade has taken its opposition activities to the next level with their anti-Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission ahead of the October 26 repeat presidential election.
Speaking on Wednesday, October 11, at the Uhuru Park grounds in Nairobi, Siaya Senator James Orengo told opposition supporters that they have renamed the park.
“From today on wards, Uhuru Park will be Raila Odinga Park. We cannot be using the park to demonstrate against the IEBC and Jubilee Party when it bears a name similar to that of Jubilee’s presidential candidate Uhuru Kenyatta,” said Orengo.
The name change was announced as NASA said that anti-IEBC demos will now be held on a daily basis and not just Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
“Everywhere we go, President Uhuru is being mentioned. So, from today, during all our demonstrations, this park will be known as Raila Odinga Park. On Friday, October 12, let’s meet here at Raila Odinga Park,” Orengo told a charged crowd.
NASA has been demonstrating against Jubilee Party’s move to amend the electoral laws, claiming it was all being done to favour President Uhuru Kenyatta. They also said the amendments are not inclusive.
On the IEBC front, NASA said there will be no election on October 26 if the polling commission does not meet their irreducible minimum demands.
This was followed by NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga and his running mate, Kalonzo Musyoka, announcing their withdrawal from the election, telling the IEBC to hold a fresh election.
