Opposition leader Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto have issued contradicting statements over the talks which led to the famous handshake on Friday, March 9.

TUKO.co.ke had earlier reported how Raila and President Uhuru Kenyatta surprised the nation by ending their fierce political rivalry and shaking hands in public.

During the political move which left a lot of tongues wagging and theories developed, Uhuru's deputy Ruto was conspicuously missing just like Raila's National Super Alliance (NASA) running mate Kalonzo Musyoka.

For over four months, neither Raila nor Uhuru publicly stated why their two closest mates missed out on the historical event which cooled the country off high political temperatures.

On Tuesday, July 10, however, Raila spilled the beans on what transpired ahead of the handshake deals when he visited Kalonzo's backyard in Kitui.

"I had thought much about what our political differences with Uhuru and after chatting with him we agreed to bury the hatchet for the sake of the country. We talked about holding talks and I asked him not to come to the discussion table with people with 2022 political ambitions in mind. Uhuru also told me not to come with Kalonzo," Raila said.

Raila's revelation however contradicted Ruto's earlier statement when he spoke to NTV on Sunday, July 8.

The DP said despite Uhuru not consulting them over all issues and decisions he took as the head of state they had talked about having a dialogue with their rivals for the sake of uniting the country.

"We talk with the president a lot., We consult over many issues. The president as the Head of State doesn't need to consult me on everything but I support every decision he makes. We severally talked about uniting our country through dialogue with every leader," Ruto said.

These statements make it difficult to ascertain whose position concerning the talks ahead of the handshake was correct and it would be a matter for Kenyans to judge.
