With a move that has been termed as ‘flexing muscle’ by China, tensions have hit a crisis point in Southern China Sea. The U. S has sent a nuclear bomber to the region as a sign to Beijing. With the tensions arising the American Enterprise Institutes Oriana Skylar Mastro warned the U. S may now be ready to take on China.
The show of force is intended to show the allies that the U. S is still the leading power. Congressman to Florida, Ted Yoho is claimed to say China still cannot match America’s military power.
In an interview conducted by Rachel Martin of NPR about the deployment of the U.S carriers to South China Sea, George Poling of the center for strategic and international studies said, “The U.S has been getting a lot of flak in the region over the last few months about its willingness to still stand up for rights. It got a lot of bad press from China in particular about whether or not it was still capable of carrier operations because of COVID-19. So it wants to show everybody that it’s still a Pacific power”.
The pentagon sent two carrier battle groups and B-52H stratofortress a nuclear weapon bomber into the strategic water way.China has also been conducting its military exercises in the Paracel Islands. A navy official downplayed the speculations on U. S showing a sign of force to China.
The officer who spoke to New York times in anonymity said that the deployment was planned to ensure shipping lanes and navigation remained open in international waters. But earlier this week, the Pentagon confirmed that they were monitoring China’s military exercises in the disputed waters.
The Pentagon in a statement made on July 2nd said that “Conducting military exercises over disputed territory in the South China Sea is counterproductive to efforts at easing tensions and maintaining stability”.
