A premature baby born at just 23 weeks survived six hours in the morgue refrigerator after being declared dead by mistake. Local officials said the newborn started to cry when they arrived to remove the body and take it to the funeral.
The fact happened in the city of Puebla, in Mexico. The heads of La Margarita Hospital, where the baby was pronounced dead, started an investigation into the case.
Still unidentified, the premature baby was born yesterday (21), at 4:29 am local time, and would have been rescued alive around 10 am.
Miguel Angel Flores, owner of Funerária Flores, said employees were in charge of collecting what they thought was the body of a baby. “When we arrived, realizing he was crying and moving,” he said. The parents were then called, as was the doctor who had signed the death certificate.
“I can’t understand how he didn’t die while he was there. The refrigerator he was in is normally used to hold limbs for amputees. I’ve never been through anything like this before,” said Flores. Both the hospital involved in the case and the police are investigating the case.
