China has imposed a new massive testing campaign in the northwest of the country, where 137 cases of covid-19 have been detected recently.
The tests started on Saturday night and examined the 4.75 million inhabitants of the city of Kashgar and its surroundings, in Xinjiang province.
This operation was started after a young worker from a textile factory tested positive.
China is the country where the new coronavirus for the first time in late December, before the disease spread worldwide.
But the Asian giant came to control the pandemic in its territory by carrying out a large number of tests, confinement measures and restrictions on circulation, while some isolated outbreaks of contagion appeared again.
This new outbreak in Xinjiang, where all positives are asymptomatic per hour, originated in a factory in Shufu County where the infected young woman and her parents work, the provincial health commission said at a news conference.
As of Sunday night, 2.8 million tests had already been carried out. In the coming days, the forecast is that tests will be carried out on the rest of the region’s inhabitants, the city government said.
Kashgar is a city near the borders with Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, located in the Xinjiang region, where the Uighur Muslim minority resides, the victim of a political and religious persecution, denied by Beijing.
