Former Canadian mayoral candidate detained in the US after illegally crossing border

Kevin J. Johnston, one of the faces of the anti-vaccine movement and a former mayor in Calgary, Canada, has a long history of trouble with the police and with Canadian law. The 50-year-old man was named a “Canadian fugitive” for failing to appear in a Toronto courthouse to begin serving a prison sentence this Tuesday. His lawyer says he fled to the United States in hopes of seeking political asylum.

One of the best known figures of the anti-vaccine movement in Canada and former candidate for mayor of Calgary city council, Kevin J. Johnston, was arrested on Tuesday in the United States after crossing the border on foot illegally, once the man was considered a “Canadian fugitive” for failing to appear in a Toronto courthouse to begin serving a prison sentence.
