The Frenchman, who did not want to reveal his formula to the press, won, on June 11, 30 million euros with the combination he had been playing for a month.
The case was reported this Tuesday by the Spanish newspaper AT. On June 11th, a French bettor won 30 million euros in EuroMillions, the biggest prize that came out this year in France and the highest value ever in the place where he lives, La Vienne.
This could be just another case of a new “eccentric” thanks to the famous European lottery. However, there is a curiosity that stands out: the Frenchman said he was victorious thanks to his own method.
Although he is not a mathematician, the man is passionate about statistics and, therefore, he said he had trusted in your calculations to get to the grand prix. The winning combination consisted of the numbers 9, 17, 21, 33 and 39, and the stars were 7 and 11, a combination that the winner had been using for a month.
“I told myself it was the last time I bet on this combination before changing it in the next draw,” he explained to the French newspaper le Parisien.
The man is responsible for filling out all the family tickets, something he does not do at random but, according to him, guided by mathematical formulas that only he knows and does not intend to reveal.
“Sometimes I see him walking away with his ruler and pen and I already know he’s going to start getting to work on mathematics,” his wife told the same Parisian newspaper.
As the Spanish sportsman writes, we do not know if it was purely and simply a fluke, or if its formula really worked, but it is certain that there are mathematicians who defend the use of certain methods to increase the chances of winning (which are , according to the Euromillions, of one among 139,838,160).
One of them is Edward Hiltner, which details on its page Lottery Codex how is it possible to do it. Your strategy is to fill in a ticket whose combination contains odd and even numbers in the same proportion, that is, for example, three odd and two even or three even and two odd. In this way, we went from having 0.025 probabilities, for playing everything even or odd, to 0.235 probabilities.
The mathematician also shows which numbers that are repeated the most. The bet is made up of five numbers and the ones that come out the most, according to statistics, are the 5 or 15, 23, 37, 44 and 50 (all of them have already come out more than 150 times). As for the two stars that must be chosen, the numbers that are repeated the most are 3 and 9, which have already come out 41 times.
Another strategy recommended by experts is to play as a team. For example, if the group consists of ten people, the probability becomes one in 13,983,816. The value would be much lower than the original prize, as it would have to be split, but it would probably still be very attractive.
