Germany. Scholz tries to fill Merkel’s shoes


As much as the “traffic light coalition” wanted to focus on the energy transition and digitization, for now it will have to face the pandemic, with Scholz promising a hard hand with the unvaccinated.

After months of negotiations, 63-year-old Olaf Schol finally took over as German chancellor this Wednesday. He replaced Angela Merkel, who, over four terms at the helm of Europe’s biggest economy, “left her mark” on the country, praised the new chancellor as she took office in the German parliament, or Bundestag. “It will be a new beginning for our country,” promised Scholz, who came to power thanks to a coalition that brought together his party, the German Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Greens and the Liberal Democratic Party (FDP).
