A kangaroo impressed two wildlife rescue agents in Australia for their pained expression when they saw their mate’s death. The animal seemed dismayed to “watch over” the six-month-old female and cub that was in her bag, still rescued alive, but who also ended up dying from her injuries.
According to information from the Australian Kangaroo Society and the English newspaper Daily Mail, the female and the calf were hit by a car on a road in the city of Yarra Glen, which is about 40 kilometers from Melbourne. The rescue team was called and decided to record the kangaroo’s expression of pain when it arrived at the scene.
According to the Australian entity for the protection of kangaroos, marsupial mammals are animals with great attachment to the family and complex social structures. It is common for them to be witnessed actively taking care of family members and showing distress and sadness when one of them dies.
The image, which continues to impress more people on the internet, was taken by agents Vicki Lloyd-Smith and Pam Rixon. They were responsible for rescuing the kangaroo cub, which was taken to a wildlife shelter near the accident site, but died shortly after the rescue. The agents put the name on Floyd.
The Australian Kangaroo Society took advantage of the disclosure of the case to ask for more solidarity from Australians in the preservation of the species, which continues to accumulate deaths in the interior of the country, especially at night, when the risk of being run over is greater.
