Pope Francis celebrates private mass with Cardinal Becciu

According to the Italian press, Pope Francis today celebrated Holy Thursday Mass in the chapel of the private apartment of Italian Cardinal Angelo Becciu, who in September 2020 was forced to resign by the Pope himself from his position as Prefect of the Congregation for the Cause of Saints, one of the highest figures in the hierarchy of the Catholic Church.

According to Vatican justice, Becciu is said to have been involved in the financial scandal of the purchase of luxury real estate in London by the Holy See. The cardinal is said to have invested about £ 100m in a portfolio of high-end apartments in the capital. British. No trial has yet been opened in the Vatican court and Becciu has always pleaded not guilty.

Francis also withdrew from the Italian cardinal all his rights linked to the cardinalate, mainly the possibility of electing a new pope during a future conclave or advising the current pontiff. The punishment was considered unprecedented.

The meeting was said to have taken place around 5:30 pm in Italy, 1:30 pm Brasília time, at the Palace of the Holy Office, which houses the cardinal’s residence.

This morning, the Pope presided over the Confirmation Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, in the Vatican, but he did not attend the celebration “in Coena Domini” (of the Lord’s Supper), also in the Vatican basilica, which recalls the Last Supper of Jesus with his apostles, and who was in charge of the Dean of the College of Cardinals, Italian Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re.

The Holy See has not commented or released images of the meeting.
