Philadelphia, United States, 16 Sep 2020 (AFP) – President of the United States, Donald Trump, declared on Tuesday (15) that a vaccine against covid-19 could be available to the population in a month, but that the pandemic could also disappear on its own.
“We are very close to having a vaccine,” he said Trump, which was already betting on optimistic forecasts.
“We are weeks away from having it, you know, it could be three weeks, four weeks,” he continued, during a question and answer session with voters in Pennsylvania broadcast on ABC News.
Hours earlier, the president had told Fox News that a vaccine could be ready “in four weeks, but it could also be eight weeks.”
His opponents accuse Trump to pressure government regulators and scientists for the hasty approval of a vaccine, which would help the Republican in the November 3 presidential election against Democratic candidate Joe Biden, who leads the polls.
Experts, like infectious disease specialist Anthony Fauci, say approval for a vaccine would be more likely later this year.
In the program broadcast by ABC, Trump it was asked whether it had downplayed the severity of the covid-19 pandemic, which has so far killed nearly 200,000 people in the United States.
“I did not underestimate it. In fact, in many ways, I overestimated it in terms of actions,” he replied.
Himself TrumpHowever, he said during interviews for the new book by renowned journalist Bob Woodward that he chose to minimize the crisis so as not to alarm Americans.
