Amid fears of an invasion of Ukraine, Blinken offers transparency in military operations, nuclear weapons control. Anything but what Putin demanded.
After weeks of escalating tensions, the Washingtons finally gave a formal response to the Kremlin’s demands. The main one, that NATO commits itself never to accept Ukraine as a member state, while withdrawing troops from Romania and Bulgaria, is inconceivable, declared the letter sent by the American Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, this Wednesday. Instead, it proposed mutual transparency regarding the operations of the respective armed forces, limiting military exercises, as well as a treaty to contain the nuclear arsenal of both countries. “The ball is in their court”, defended Blinken, in a press conference.
