Copenhagen, 14 Jan 2021 (AFP) – Europe needs to be supportive of vaccines, considering that so far 95% of doses have been used in 10 countries, the World Health Organization (WHO) regional director said on Thursday (14) ).

It is necessary that “all countries capable of contributing, giving and supporting fair access and administration of vaccines, do so”, said the director for the Europe region of WHO, Hans Kluge, in an online press conference.

He highlighted the “enormous” efforts of the organization and its partners for each country to obtain products.

According to him, 95% of vaccines against covid-19 administered worldwide were used in 10 countries, which he did not specify.

According to the data analysis website Our world in data, the United States, China, United Kingdom, Israel, United Arab Emirates, Italy, Russia, Germany, Spain and Canada.

In just over a month, some 28 million doses have been injected in 46 countries, said WHO emergency director Michael Ryan on Wednesday.

However, despite the start of vaccination campaigns, the rapid spread of new strains of the virus, especially those detected in the United Kingdom and South Africa, is of concern.

“The situation is alarming,” confirmed Kluge.

In the Europe region, 25 countries, including Russia, detected cases related to the new VOC 202012/01 strain.

“With greater transmissibility and similar disease severity, the variant is of concern: without greater control to stop the spread, there will be a greater impact on health centers, which are almost full and under pressure,” he explained.

But for Kluge it is important to remain optimistic.

“2021 will be another year of coronavirus, but it will be a more predictable year, the situation will be easier to control “, he said.
