Death of George Floyd: Popovich smashes Trump, a “deranged idiot”

Gregg Popovich pulled out the heavy artillery to go after Donald Trump in an interview with The Nation. The San Antonio coach calls the US president a “loose” and “brainless” man. A charge launched a week after the death of George Floyd, who created a wave of protest against racism and police violence in the United States.

Gregg Popovich is known for his outspokenness. And it’s not his last outing that’s going to defy the legend. In an interview with The Nation, the San Antonio coach attacked Donald head-on Trump, with very strong words. Visibly exasperated by the behaviour of the American president, the 71-year-old technician unceremoniously tapped him, while a wave of protest anti-racism and police violence shakes up the United States for a week and the death of George Floyd during an arrest in Minneapolis.

“He’s hiding in the basement of the White House. “He’s a coward,” said the legendary Spurs coach. He is responsible for this situation and he runs away like a primary school child. He can’t do anything to improve the situation because he’s a deranged idiot.”

“It never acts for the common good”

“If Trump had a brain, he would come out and say something to bring people together,” he continues. But he doesn’t care about that. Even with what’s going on. That’s how deranged he is. It’s all about him. It never acts for the common good. He’s always been like that. All he has to do is say ‘Black Lives Matter’ but he won’t because he has to calm down the small group of supporters who validate his madness.”

Beyond the little consideration he gives to Trump, Popovich is annoyed that the same problems have been polluting his country over the years: “We see all this police violence and racism today, but we have seen them before. And nothing changes. But without understanding the cause of this problem, there will be no change. White Americans have always avoided taking this issue into account because it is our privilege to be able to do so. That, too, has to change.”

Popovich’s comments have obviously not gone unnoticed across the Atlantic. Golden State coach Steve Kerr praised them in a message posted on the networks. “That’s why it’s Pop. As he once said to me, ‘Life is short, you defend something or you don’t’. He has always been a strong advocate of justice and equality. And he gave us the courage to do it too.”
