Recalling Kobe Bryant’s commitment to police violence against blacks, his widow Vanessa posted a moving message on social media, in which she asked her countrymen to “spread love” and “chase hate.”
Magic Johnson, LeBron James, Jaylen Brown, Trae Young… As part of the United States took to the streets following the tragic death of George Floyd, an African-American man, in the hands of the police, many NBA players have spoken out in recent days to support protests or protest police violence against blacks. They were joined in this battle by a voice that carries: that of Vanessa Bryant, the widow of Kobe.
On Instagram, the wife of the late Lakers star posted a photo of “Black Mamba” wearing a T-shirt with capital letters written “I can’t breathe,” “I can’t breathe.” Words spoken by Eric Garner in 2014, just before he died during an arrest, and which now serve as a rallying cry for protesters.

“Let’s be an example of the change we want to see”
“My husband wore this t-shirt years ago, and yet we haven’t made progress,” says Vanessa Bryant. Life is so fragile, so unpredictable. Life is too short. So let us share and embrace the qualities and similarities that unite us as people.”
And to call on her countrymen to change their behaviour: “Hunt hate,” she asks. Teach respect and love for all at home and at school. Spread love. Fight for change, sign up to vote. Don’t use innocent lives lost as an excuse to plunder. Be an example of the change we want to see.” Before concluding with the now famous #BlackLivesMatter.
