But he did not travel or was with the team in the “bubble” of Orlando (Florida), for the reboot of the NBA, which in the end cost him to stay out of the playoffs in the Western Conference.
Duncan remained in San Antonio to help power forward LaMarcus Aldridge to rehab from right shoulder surgery that cost him to miss the season finale.
Popovich credited Duncan with being a key factor in creating and maintaining the culture that helped the Spurs win five NBA championships.
Duncan spent his entire 19-year career playing for the San Antonio team, with which he was selected 15 times to the All-Star Game, two Most Valuable Player (MVP) nominations, three Finals MVPs and one award of Rookie of the Year.
After Duncan agreed to become an assistant coach, Popovich indicated that he did not anticipate the former player having an extended tenure on the bench.
“Something tells me that it’s not going to be his passion in life, but it’s going to be great this year,” Popovich commented in the Spurs media before the start of last season.
