It’s already over for Novak Djokovic at the US Open, and more than surprisingly. The Serbian, world number 1 this Sunday, was disqualified from the tournament during his match against Pablo Carreno Busta. The reason? A ball sent out of spite and strong enough, after a break conceded … and which landed on a linesman.
A long negotiation
The judge, hit quite violently in the neck, fell and took several minutes to recover. The 33-year-old, a three-time winner at Flushing Meadows, then immediately made a gesture of apology, going directly to the judge to check on her.
There followed a long discussion between the referees first, then between the referee and Novak Djokovic, who was then informed of his disqualification. Incredulous, the Serb tried to defend himself. Without success. At this point in the match, the world number 1, who had just received treatment for pain in his left shoulder, was down 6-5 in the first set.
